Sarah Kawakami is a creative entrepreneur, former professional hula dancer, and co-founder of Alikaleo Park. After traveling the world performing hula and working behind the scenes as a makeup artist and wardrobe stylist for photoshoots and large productions, Sarah turned her passion for storytelling and design into building a family business alongside her husband.
Inspired by their two active sons, the couple launched Alikaleo Park by reimagining vintage Hawaiian artwork from their family’s 70-year legacy aloha shirt company, ʻIolani Sportswear. What began as a colorful kids’ brand has grown into an activewear brand for the entire family, blending Hawaiʻi’s rich artistic heritage with modern designs made for everyday adventure.
Alx Kawakami is a Honolulu-based singer-songwriter dubbed “the Hawaiian James Taylor” by Grammy-winning producer Ken Caillat. A founding member of the family band ManoaDNA, he built a following internationally that has led to multiple shows and tours across the globe. As a solo artist, he performs with his band Alx and the mrXmn and is a frequent collaborator with the legendary Henry Kapono, including being a founding board member of the Henry Kapono Foundation. His catalog spans six-plus albums and 40+ original songs through over 2 decades of music.
Sarah and Alx Kawakami have spent nearly two decades building a life and a business, side by side. Long before becoming entrepreneurs, the couple traveled the world together performing music and hula, sharing Hawaiʻi’s culture with audiences around the world.
Their journey eventually brought them home to ʻIolani Sportswear, Alx’s family business, where they immersed themselves in one of Hawaiʻi’s longest-standing aloha apparel companies. Surrounded by decades of vintage Hawaiian artwork, they saw an opportunity to create something new while honoring their family’s legacy.
What is their Ambassador Role?
Together, they founded Alikaleo Park, a modern active lifestyle brand built within the family company that breathes new life into historic Hawaiian artwork. By reusing and reimagining original prints from the archives, they create colorful, sun-protective apparel designed for today’s active families. Inspired by raising their two sons in Hawaiʻi, Sarah and Alx are passionate about preserving the islands’ artistic heritage while encouraging families everywhere to get outside, make memories, and discover the joy of living life under the sun.
